Wood comparison

Spruce and maple compared

Spruce and maple serve different purposes in instrument making. That is exactly why looking at structure, appearance and typical use is so helpful.

Spruce

  • typically used for tops and resonance surfaces
  • straight annual ring structure
  • calm and even overall appearance
  • especially illustrative in macro images

Maple

  • typically used for backs, ribs and necks
  • more lively flame or figure
  • visually stronger grain pattern
  • characterful structure in close detail
